Tindall To Build Dedicated Wind Tower Base Plant In Kansas

SPARTANBURG, SC—Tindall Corporation announces plans to construct a new precast, prestressed
manufacturing facility in Newton, KS, that will be dedicated to the manufacture of the company’s new concrete wind tower base system—the Atlas CTB™. Situated on a 144-acre site in the Kansas Logistics Park, the 150,000 – 200,000-sq.-ft., state-of-the-art facility will be the company’s sixth and largest.

“This new plant represents a capital investment of $66 million,” said Tindall’s Vice President of Business Development, Chris Palumbo, P.E.

Slated to begin construction by April 2011, the new plant will take about 9 months to complete. Tindall expects 200 employees on the payroll by the end of the first year of production; 400 employees by the end of year three.

The Newton site was selected for several reasons, including its ready access to interstate and rail lines to handle the large volume of inbound and outbound freight needed; its central location within the country’s wind corridor; its small town feel; and quality incentives provided by a joint effort of the city, county and state. “This is an incredible announcement for Newton,” Mayor Racquel Thiesen said. “This company will be a huge benefit to our community and the entire region.”

Introduced at the WINDPOWER 2009 Conference in May 2009, the Atlas CTB has been in development for three years. “We are pleased to be applying our precast design and engineering solutions to the wind energy market with this new product,” said Palumbo. “This base system for wind tower monopoles boosts the turbines to heights above 100 meters into stronger, steadier winds that generate more power.” The Newton plant will manufacture the product’s precast concrete components, which are transported and assembled on wind farm sites.

Tindall Corporation is a leader in the design and manufacture of precast, prestressed concrete structural and cladding systems for mixed-use, educational, commercial, industrial, energy, wind power and parking structures; modular products for the corrections industry; and utility products. With more than 45 years of experience, Tindall is one of the nation’s largest precast companies and has five manufacturing facilities strategically located across the southern states.
