In 2019, the city of Petersburg, Virginia, recognized the need for a modern parking structure at the Petersburg Transit Center, a busy hub for daily commuters. The existing open-air asphalt lot offered limited protection from the elements and lacked the capacity needed to adequately serve the area’s growing demands. To address these issues, the Petersburg City Council approved the construction of the Park & Ride facility, with the goal of enhancing both functionality and safety while preserving the city’s historical aesthetic. Tindall Corporation was selected to lead the project, charged with delivering a precast concrete structure that would expand parking capacity, improve security, and elevate the overall quality of the site, all while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding historical architecture.

Construction of the 74,570-square-foot Park & Ride project began in 2020, aiming to add 216 parking spaces. Tindall’s scope of work included the design and installation of the structural elements, precast architectural wall panels, and window frames. The architectural wall panels were specifically designed to blend with the nearby brick-dominated architecture, preserving the cohesive and historical aesthetic of the area.

Tindall was chosen for the Park & Ride project due to its expertise in precast concrete solutions, which offer significant advantages in urban environments. The use of precast concrete not only ensured architectural consistency but also allowed for rapid construction in a confined urban site. Tindall’s approach minimized disruptions to local traffic and enabled the project to be completed ahead of schedule. The uniform appearance of the precast panels, characterized by their precise surface details, texture, and color, along with additional decorative elements, provided both durability and a long-lasting visual appeal. Thanks to this efficient construction process, the Park & Ride facility became operational in August 2022, just two months after it began and roughly one year ahead of its anticipated completion date.

The Petersburg Park & Ride facility stands as a testament to Tindall’s ability to merge modern design needs with the challenges of historical architecture, delivering a functional and visually cohesive solution that meets the city’s needs.
